The Five Welfare Needs

Behaviour

Forbidding your dog to run, play and explore may lead to boredom and this can lead to behavioral problems. Dogs are social animals and learn to communicate through play. Not only is this critical for mental health but it is also an important part of socialisation.  Although dogs will be happy playing by themselves they should have regular opportunities to engage in play with their owners.

Health

Your dog depends on you for protection from pain, injury, suffering, and disease.  When you own a dog, their physical wellbeing should be one of your top priorities. There are plenty of illnesses that dogs are susceptible to but many of them can be prevented. Make sure you keep a close eye on your dog and watch out for changes in their behavior as this could signify a bigger problem.

Diet

One of the biggest factors influencing your dog’s physical and psychological welfare is its diet. Without good food and sensible portions, dogs are at risk from obesity and obesity-related diseases. Check their weight regularly to avoid it creeping up over time.

Companionship

Dogs are social animals and this so usually (not always) like to be around other dogs and have lots of attention from their human counterparts. It’s important that you make time to nurture them socially so try not to leave them alone for too long.

Environment

All owners have a responsibility to provide their dog with a safe and clean environment. This should include a comfortable and clean place for them to rest undisturbed and go to the bathroom if needed.
